Understanding Pallet Load Ratings: Static vs Dynamic vs Racking
Static, dynamic, and racking capacity are three different numbers that get confused constantly. This guide explains what each one means and how to apply them safely.

Every pallet has not one load rating but three, and mixing them up is one of the most common and dangerous mistakes in warehousing. A pallet that safely holds 4,600 lb sitting on the floor might buckle under 3,000 lb suspended in racking. Understanding static, dynamic, and racking capacity, and why they differ so sharply, is the difference between a stable rack and a collapse investigation.
The three ratings defined

The ordering is almost always static > dynamic > racking, and the gaps between them can be large. For a typical GMA-class 48x40 pallet, illustrative figures run static up to ~4,600 lb, dynamic ~2,800 lb, and racking ~2,800 lb. Treat these as ranges; the real number depends on wood species, board thickness, moisture, and construction quality.
Why the numbers differ so much
Static: the easy case
When a loaded pallet sits on a concrete floor, the ground supports the entire bottom deck. The pallet is barely being asked to be a structure at all; the floor does the work. That is why static ratings are the highest number you will see, and also why they are the least useful for real decision-making, because pallets rarely just sit still.
Dynamic: the pallet in motion
The moment a forklift lifts the pallet, only the fork tines carry the load. The deck boards must now transfer weight across to the stringers or blocks while the whole assembly flexes and jolts through travel, turns, and set-downs. This bending stress is why the dynamic rating is lower than static. Dynamic is the number that matters every time you move product.
Racking: the hardest test
Racking is the cruelest condition. The pallet spans two beams with nothing beneath the center, so the deck boards and stringers act as beams themselves, sagging under load. Deflection and long-term creep (slow sagging over hours of storage) both come into play. A pallet can pass a quick load test yet deflect dangerously after sitting loaded overnight. That is why the racking rating is conservative and why you must never substitute a static number for it.
The failure most warehouses never see coming is the racking substitution error: someone reads the 4,600 lb static rating, stores 3,500 lb of product on beams, and the pallet slowly bows until a board lets go. Always design racks to the racking rating, with a safety margin.
Factors that move every rating
- Wood species: dense hardwoods like oak carry far more than softwoods like pine.
- Board thickness and count: more and thicker deck boards raise capacity and reduce deflection.
- Moisture content: wet wood is weaker and heavier; a heat-treated and dried pallet performs more predictably.
- Design: block pallets often out-rack stringer pallets due to more even support.
- Load distribution: a uniformly spread load rates higher than a concentrated point load.
- Grade and repairs: a repaired Grade C pallet may not reach the full published rating; see our grades guide.
Reading a spec sheet correctly
- Identify which of the three ratings the number refers to. If it does not say, ask.
- Confirm whether the load was tested as uniformly distributed or concentrated.
- Check the support span used for racking tests; a wider beam gap lowers capacity.
- Apply a safety factor. Many operations design to roughly two-thirds of the rated racking capacity.
- Re-verify for used pallets, because grade and repair history change real-world capacity.
A worked example
Suppose you store 40 cases at 60 lb each, so 2,400 lb per pallet, on selective racking. Your static rating of 4,600 lb is irrelevant. Your racking rating of about 2,800 lb applies, and 2,400 lb sits comfortably under it, but only just, so you should either confirm the pallet is Grade A or B in sound condition or step up to a heavier-duty custom-built pallet. If instead you were only moving that load by forklift to a floor stack, the dynamic rating governs the move and the static rating governs the storage.
The bottom line
Three ratings, three support conditions, three different numbers. Match the rating to how the pallet is actually being used at each moment: dynamic when moving, racking when on beams, static only when floor-stacked. When in doubt, spec conservatively.
